About

Based on its historical strength, the Department of Political Science at the University of São Paulo is a leader in research and teaching in Brazil and Latin America. The department has stood out for its consistent steps towards internationalization, for the training and intellectual production of its students, and for the institutional leadership and visibility of its initiatives in the area of ​​political science and international relations.

The Department’s Graduate Program, recognized for two trienniums with a maximum score of 7 in CAPES evaluations, is responsible for training master’s and doctoral students with the qualifications and capacity to contribute to the public and private university systems, to government and to public administration, at the three levels of the federation, as well as in recognized non-governmental organizations and in the professional market.


The Department also organizes a range of seminars, lectures and conferences open to all members of the academic community. Since 2010 the Department has hosted the IPSA-USP Summer School which has provided high quality training to more than 1,000 Brazilian and international students. Many research centers are based in the Department, in particular the Center for Metropolitan Studies (CEM), one of the Research, Innovation and Diffusion Centers (CEPIDS) of the São Paulo State Research Support Foundation (FAPESP), a multidisciplinary group which includes demographers, political scientists, sociologists, geographers, economists and anthropologists.
